Tech Writing & Editing
In addition to (and in between) my research and scholarly writing, I've greatly enjoyed writing and editing all things tech since Y2K first introduced me to the excitement, challenges and massive amounts of b.s. in the always-changing, over-hyped world of IT. While in the NWT and Yukon during the 1990s, working in the field of indigenous media and adapting broadcast and print technologies for the purpose of preserving and reviving native language, culture and identity, I grew increasingly fascinated by the potential for new ICT technologies to help revitalize indigenous traditions, and first wrote about these in Cultural Survival Quarterly in the mid-1990s. I grew so fascinated by the confluence of technology and culture, that in the years since I've turned to tech editing and writing as a means to fund my own research on numerous occasions, and have found myself editing various technical publications while in the field in Borneo, Hokkaido, highland Southeast Asia and even in tribal Southwest China (where I had to switch Internet cafes several times each day to stay one step ahead of the infamous "Great Wall" of internet censorship while working on an article about the DPRK's missile technology, not the most comfortable topic to be researching while inside the PRC!) Below is a list of my various tech writing and editing projects over the years with my continuing thanks to all for their assistance keeping me immersed (going on 25 years now!) as an independent scholar. (Note to IT executives: I am on the lookout for a new, at-home editing or competitive intelligence project if you can use my services!)
